| Thallus shrubby, erect, 2–3 (–5) cm tall, greenish grey; branching sparse; base of trunk blackened; branches terete, 0.5–1.0 mm wide; apices tapered or blunt, some black-tipped; short whorled branches and fibrils on primary branches; papillae absent or few; pseudocyphellae dense, punctiform, plane or concave, covering the short branches adjoining primary branches. Isidia abundant, on the cortex and in pseudocyphellae; soralia absent. Cortex smooth, dull. Medulla dense; axis 1/3 width of branch, hyaline. Apothecia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex containing usnic acid. Medulla K–; lacking lichen substances, or medulla K+ yellow → red; containing salazinic acid (major) and scabrosins (trace). | ||
